McCain in Baghdad

If you saw 60 Minutes last night, you surely wondered if the piece on McCain was made in Disneyland. A Kafkaesque scene if ever there was one. An unabashed military hero, a victim of torture as a captive Navy Pilot during the Vietnam War, a true blue military family tree and the one time leading Republican candidate for the Presidency all went into the steamy cauldron that led McCain into his current state of delusional confusion. Perhaps you have to add his age. He took Senator Lindsey Graham with him, who was apparently in need of family rugs. And fortunately to add at least a dash of reality to the trip, Representative Mike Pence of Indiana viewed the scene and added that it looked like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime. Some summer. Dressed in full military garb, with flak jackets, bullet-proof vests, surrounded by an army of weaponized sharp shooters in Shorja Market in Baghdad, that had been cleaned and scrubbed with Murphy’s Soap, McCain announced that things were getting better, we might be on our way to a military victory. The "surge" was working. It didn’t matter as Frank Rich has pointed out, that the day of the interview six Americans were killed in the Baghdad environs. A few reporters apparently didn’t follow the script, as it was pointed out that 60 people had been killed in that market since February 1, 2007. The day after McCain’s stroll, the London Times pointed out that 21 merhants and workers in Shorja Market were ambushed and murdered, by what motive, reprisals for McCain’s visit? McCain is now running well behind in the popularity contest based on raising money for his campaign for the presidency. But he doomed his candidacy and his march towards the Presidency is more like a death watch and everyone, including his sometimes buddy George W. Bush knows it.

George Bush has entoumbed himself by a war, a presidency and pack of lies, not all of which have been revealed. But he seems to have no problem inviting McCain in to share the fate reserved for the most unAmerican of presidents. For the 2000 presidential campaign, Bush tried to pin an illegitimate son charge on McCain. Now he is willing to have McCain suffer an illegitimate war charge. The first charge didn’t stick, the second can’t be erased. McCain’s future political career has been pointedly redirected towards the Arizona sun. In the end, it seemed like the 60 Minutes piece would be better on YouTube.
